Carlisle is one of the largest cities in England is you are strictly measuring area as it also encompasses the towns of Longtown and Brampton. The city has an extensive history as it can be traced back to the Romans in the 1st century. It is closely associated with Hadrian’s Wall. After the Romans were defeated by the Danes the town became part of the Southern Uplands of Scotland.

The Anglo Scottish border is adjacent to the city and this is called the Solway Firth. This border separates this area from Dumfries and Galloway. Many people find themselves getting a bit wet as much of the city lies on the flood plains for the Eden River. The temperature is fairly static as it is an oceanic climate with no overly great temperature changes.

Carlisle was called Luguvalium by the Romans that settled it and much of the older buildings can be sound inside the city walls. You can find several historic buildings, a cathedral, museum and castle. There is plenty of military history as this was the last city in England before going in to Scotland. The local castle, Carlisle castle was the prison for Mary Queen of Scots and was built in 1092.

The town turned industrial in the 19th century and contained several food manufacturers, textile mills and engineering works. Today there are still plenty of food manufacturers in the area. There was once a canal linking the city to Port Carlisle but this has since been filled in. Today the railway follows the old canal.

There are some famous companies associated with the town as the Metal Box factories, Carr’s of Carlisle and Kangol all still have factories in the area. Cavaghan & Gray is the biggest employer in the area as they produced foods for the major supermarkets. Carr’s is one of the best know food manufactures as they are best known for their biscuits.

Carlisle is a main stop on several railway lines and as many as 7 railways once stopped at the railway station. The town also was home to the largest railway marshaling year though this has since closed down. The citadel railway station is the main stop for the Settle and Carlisle Line as well as the West coast Main Line.

The city is known for their football team, Carlisle United. The very first football team was in 1928 and many teams throughout the years have won many famous competitions. While Carlisle United is not the most famous of teams but they have had several different famous players.
