Inverness, often called the capital of the Highlands, was granted city status in two thousand and one and at this moment in time is the only city in the Highlands of Scotland. Uniquely (in Britain) Inverness has no legal boundaries which can cause problems with population statistics. The estimations are made less accurate because of the fact that the population in increasing dramatically, the city has the highest growth rate in Britain. One thing we can say for certain is that the population of the city is very content , in 2008 the Telegraph ranked Inverness fifth out of 189 cities in the whole of the UK for its quality of life. So we can safely state that Inverness is a pretty cool place in which to spend some time and this is more than likely one of the facts which make Inverness amazingly popular with tourists. Crucially there is a great deal of bed and breakfast accommodations in Inverness with most of it being available to book online.

Inverness is also frequently called the gateway to the Highlands of Scotland for the obvious fact that it is best placed to get the most out of the Highland public transport system and a large amount of visitor attractions are relatively easy to get to. Possibly the best way to get to them is by going on an organized tour or day trip. There are a few organizations visiting places such as, Urquart Castle, Culloden or Loch Ness or for the more hardy tourists it is possible to visit such places as John O’Groats in a single day. You can also go on a few city tours, such as those run by Tony Harmsworth.

Some visitors stay in two locations in the Highlands of Scotland such as Fort William & Inverness. The town of Fort William is most popular with people who enjoy sports especially ramblers, mountaineers and hill walkers who get excited reaching the summit of Ben Nevis which looks down upon the town center. In a similar fashion to Inverness Fort William bed and breakfast and rather like all bed and breakfast accommodation in Scotland it is commonly not very expensive, superb value for money and very comfortable, clean and tidy with the best hospitality.

An important fact to remember is that Inverness Airport is, approximately, 7 miles east of the city at Dalcross. It is easy to catch a bus or hail a cab to the small but busy airport which is quite reasonable. If you require a map of Inverness then you will discover that they are free at the tourist office, in the center of town. While you are enjoying you vacation in Inverness you should make a point to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the ’stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an interactive experience which is immensely enjoyable.
