If you own websites or if you design them, one of the things that you need to understand is exactly how a web hosting platform operates. Understanding the basics of web hosting can help you grow your business in a number of different ways that you might not even be familiar with. Although it may seem like simplistic information, ignoring it can be detrimental to your overall business plans.

It can be quite overwhelming whenever you first start looking at the hosting accounts that are available, especially because there are thousands of them to choose from. Although there are a number of different companies for you to look at, there are really only a handful of different types of hosting accounts for you to inspect. Shared hosting is one type but there is also virtual Private servers as well as dedicated servers. Understanding the difference between these three can help your business to grow at a steady rate.

The most common type of server that is available is a shared hosting account and most individual webmasters or businesses get their start on one of these types of servers. It is the same as any other type of server but the real difference is that you will be sharing the physical box with a number of other webmasters. You will still have your own little chunk of the box that nobody else will be able to access, but there may be thousands of other websites that are available on the same server. This can cause some problems.

It is a rare thing that you will find a hosting company who is willing to tell you how many other websites are on one of the shared servers. One of the main problems that occurs whenever you’re on the shared hosting account is that other websites might be running scripts that could slow the entire server down. This rarely ever happens on a reliable host, but it is still something that you need to keep in mind.

The next type of hosting is a virtual Private server, usually referred to as a VPS. This type of a server is similar to a shared hosting account but the main difference is that instead of splitting it among thousands of websites, you are only going to share it with about half a dozen. This gives you access to a much larger chunk of the server resources which means that your website will run smoother and faster.

It takes a little bit of time for your business to grow to the extent where it needs a dedicated server, but there will eventually come a time whenever this is the case. Many people who are not technical minded can find the entire process of moving to a dedicated server difficult, but it does not necessarily need to be that way. A dedicated server is the same thing as any other type of server but you will have access to all of the resources. This can really boost the performance of your websites noticeably.

One of the interesting things about the virtual private servers and dedicated servers is the fact that you are able to upgrade various components that exist on the server. For example, you can pay additional money every month for a larger physical disk or for additional memory and bandwidth. This allows you to grow, even within a hosting platform that is at its upper limit.

The first thing that you should look at are the variety of different shared servers that are available for you to use. Start out small and then move up as you feel the need and as your business continues to grow and to outgrow the servers.
