Crime is not just in the movies and on television. Crime is real and it happens every day, all over the world. In fact, in 2008, there were 1,382,012 violent crimes, 441,855 robberies, and 2,222,196 burglaries in the United States alone.

One can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of once home. Locked doors and fences cannot give a 100% guarantee of safety. Usually, a simple testimony may not even be enough to put the culprit in jail, and it may take years to resolve a crime if you’re not lucky. Hence, to save you the trouble, security cameras are essential to have a proof of the crime committed.

There are two basic kinds of security cameras: the wired and the wireless. Probably the most common security camera system is the CCTV or closed-circuit television camera. This system uses television cameras to capture images which it then sends through cables to television monitors. We usually see these in stores. What’s more, high resolution versions with audio capture are used in Big Brother’s house.

During the early years of the security cameras, wires are installed to transfer data to monitors. Business and home owners would need to put holes for the wires to go thru. The security cameras would be affixed in places where people have knowledge of where exactly they were installed.

Nowadays, the CCTV camera has a growing competition. This is in the form of wireless security camera systems. Wireless cameras, well, do not need wires to transmit images to television monitors or to storage devices. They also come with various features, and in different sizes and shapes. Some can be as small as finger and used as spy cameras inserted in toy bears and clocks; many can use batteries; others can be used outdoors; a number are motion-activated; several can capture images even in the dark; and some can capture even sounds. The more advanced ones can capture clear images indoors, even though the subject is about 40 feet away!

Most wireless cameras have average sizes, although there are small wireless security cameras that can be used as spy cams

Some wireless cameras may require batteries

You can purchase plug-in cameras if you prefer

There are many models that can capture footage in color and even capture images in dim light.

And others can capture color photos or videos in dimly lit areas or even in the dark.

The cost of wireless security camera systems varies widely. For example the Mini Pinhole Camera System costs $73.95, while the superior Global Watchman Outdoor Cellular Surveillance System costs $599.95. The latter is more expensive because of its features that include: motion detection, day and night photo capture, and image retrieval that is available worldwide.
