There are many ways to generate DIY power for the home. One of the more common of these methods is by the use of solar energy. Persons interested in generating power from the sun should keep a few things in mind.

You can only generate solar power where the sun is shining. Therefore, if you live in the extreme north or south near the arctic circles, there will be about six months per year that your solar energy source is worthless. However, there are another six months per year, that you will have energy twenty four hours per day. For the rest of the world, we can generate solar power when the sun is shining, as long as the days are not overcast.

Since there will times, no matter where you live that you are not able to generate power from the solar cell. Sometimes these are the times you need power the most, like after dark. One way to handle this problem is to remain connected to the grid and use commercial electricity to supplement your energy needs. When you are producing at full capacity and do not need all the power you can sell it back to the power company to reduce what you pay for electrical energy in some cases.

If you are not able or do not want to remain connected to the grid, you will need to have a bank of batteries to store the energy that you produce. Batteries have become much easier to handle and much less expensive during the past few years.

Since the energy that is produced by solar energy is DC electrical energy, it must be converted to AC energy before it can be used in a home. Conversion of the power is accomplished using a power inverter. Once the power has been converted, it is useful to operate many of your normal household tools.

Choose DIY power and save money in powering your home.
