25 Nov 2009If you’ve ever wished you could get rid of some of the tangled up wires that surround your work area, you’ll be happy to hear about wireless computer speakers. With these speakers, you can hook up a transmitter to your computer that sends a sound signal to the speakers. This allows the speakers to play your music without being connected to your computer.
Wireless speakers work by sending an FM radio signal through the transmitter that is connected to the computer to the speakers, which may or may not be located in the same room. The FM signals are not stopped by walls and ceilings, so you are not limited as to where you can place your wireless speakers, except that they cannot be so far away that the signal doesn’t reach them. The distance that the signal will travel varies, but most models have a range anywhere from 100 to 300 feet.
If you want to place your wireless speakers far away from your computer, you can expect to pay more for speakers that can transmit the signal a greater distance. For most uses, a less expensive model of speakers that doesn’t transmit as strong a signal will be sufficient.
Some models of wireless stereo speakers can be used as computer speakers, but it’s hard to know which ones will work and which ones won’t without trying them out. If you have a friend who has some wireless speakers they will let you borrow for testing purposes, you may be able to find out if they will work with your computer or not. Otherwise, it is probably best to stick with models that are made specifically for computers.
The frequency of most wireless speakers for computers is about 900 MHz. Some other common household items often operate in the same frequency range. These items may conflict with the wireless computer speakers, resulting in feedback. The items that are most likely to cause interference with the wireless speakers are cordless phones and baby monitors. If you use these items in your home, you should try to purchase a model of computer speakers that operates on a different frequency.
Most companies that make wireless speakers manufacture them so that they can use either batteries or an AC adaptor. If you are going to be using your speakers in a location where you will not be able to plug them in, it is important to make sure that the model of speakers you are buying can be operated from batteries.
Wireless computer speakers can enable you to play your music in a different room or outside of the house. This capability can come in handy, especially when you have guests over who might want music in an area that is not close to your computer. Plus, by using wireless speakers, you can get rid of some of the tangled up wires around your computer desk.
