Inverness, often referred to as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland, was eventually granted city status in the year 2001 and is currently the the only city to be found in the region. Uniquely (in the United Kingdom) Inverness has no statutory boundaries which creates problems with population statistics. The calculations are made less accurate because Inverness’ population is on the increase, the city has the highest growth rate of any city in Great Britain. Aberdeen’s buildings, since the mid 18th century, have been made using local grey granite and the city has a sandy coastline.
