7 Jul 2010Touch screen technology is being introduced into Portable Digital Assistants (PDAs). This has become fashionable as it now becomes easier to operate the PDAs. A touch with a finger or a stylus on the display area of the touchscreen is detected instantly by the PDAs. The function displayed on the point of touch gets activated. There is actually no need of an intermediary as the stylus as the finger itself is enough. The display area of the touchscreen becomes the interface between the operator and the device. This makes the conventional mouse or a touchpad redundant as these are replaced by the display and the touch. Touchscreen technology was developed during the 1960s. It was used in a computer assisted learning terminal in 1972. The HP-150 launched in 1983 was one of the first commercial touchscreen computers. Touchscreen technology has further evolved into multipoint touchscreen where the touchscreen responds to more than one finger at a time. This made it possible for more than one person to interact at the same time with the touchscreen.
Audio, video and images are combined in a portable media player. MP3 is the most common audio format used in them. Many of them might also support other audio formats as the Windows Media Audio, WAV and the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC). Usually LCD or the OLED screen is used to display images and video. The most common format used is the JPEG format although file formats as the TIFF, PNG and GIF formats might also be supported to view images. MPEG-4 video format is the most common format used in these players. They may also be able to use video formats such the AVI as well as the Windows Media Video (WMV) formats. USB cables are used to transfer audio as well as video files between the computer and the players or the portable digital assistants (PDAs).

Portable media players, or MP3 players, have been on the market since 1997, when the Audio Highway Listen Up player was first released. The basic design was around since 1979 when Kane Kramer invented a device that could only play up to 3.5 minutes of audio. The two decade wait, in part was due to how to convey the audio files. When early prototypes were software-based, they were energy hogs, unfeasible. When a decoder chip was invented that could read from flash memory, the industry could flourish.
