21 Aug 2010This is another of our exciting family adventures in Guatemala. This time my husband and I decided that we wanted to take our son for a visit to Semuc Champey and the Lanquin Caves. For that we had to stay in the nearby town of Cobn. But let’s talk about the town first: Cobn is a beautiful town located in the Alta Verapaz Department of Guatemala. It is located 1320 meters above sea level so it gets a bit chilly at night. It is also one of the major coffee producers of the country. 26 Jul 2010Hoodia gordonii, an herb, was well known to the San Bushmen who inhabits the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Being traditionally nomadic hunters, they go for hunting that will last for about a week. With scarce food around, they habitually resort to consuming hoodia which will help them manage without food by being not hungry. They would first remove the roots, leaves, spines and flowers from the plant. Then they would peel away the skin of the stem and eat them. Scientists have found that what it does is to mimic the signals that glucose will send to the nerve cells in the brain, but many times powerful than glucose. This will suppress your urge to eat. Naturally this wisdom of the Bushmen can be a boon to those who are for ever doing all they can to shed their unwanted fat.

20 Jul 2010It became known that the San Bushmen have been using Hoodia Gordonii for centuries. They found a number of uses of the plant of which one was that its consumption suppressed hunger. They used to go hunting into the Kalahari Desert lasting several days. Hoodia helped them to suppress hunger during the period. It was the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) that successfully isolated P57, the active ingredient that suppresses hunger. P57 was patented by CSIR in 1996. They also recognized the San people as the originators of this knowledge. This makes the San Bushmen eligible for a share in the profit from commercialization of their traditional knowledge.
The day has been relatively without any major mishaps except the few times one slipped and slid down the mountain slope. But weariness has caught on. The mountain sides are slowly being swept by an eerie grey stillness. The camping sites come to sight. There is another burst of energy that comes to push you into the vicinity of the camping site. The dinner must be cooking. May be a wash in the mountain stream to wash away the dust will be good. The thought of finally sliding into the sleeping bag for its warmth was just too enticing.
