Hundreds of people who had hip replacement surgery using a Zimmer Durom Cup implant prior to July, 2008 are now experiencing complications that doctors never anticipated. They are having pain long after the normal recovery period, needing to have revision surgeries to take care of defective implants, incurring high medical bills, and losing wages from not being able to work. Zimmer Holdings, Inc., manufacturer of the Durom Cup, claims that their product is not defective; however, they have been offering settlements to some patients which shows they are accepting some liability.

Many patients who had Zimmer Durom Cup implants used in their hip replacement surgeries are finding that there are complications that far exceed the normal expectations for recovery. These patients are experiencing a lot of extra pain for longer periods of time, facing revision surgeries and increased medical expenses, and losing revenue by being unable to work at their regular jobs. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is claiming that that their implant is in no way defective and not to blame for the surgical failures, some patients are filing lawsuits against them and receiving settlements.

During 2006 and 2007, 12,000 Americans had hip replacement surgery and had a Zimmer Durom Cup implanted in one or both hips. Since that time, almost 6% of these devices have failed. Patients have complained of a great deal of pain after they should have been completely healed, and doctors have found that their hip implants have become loose or even migrated from where they should be. Because of these problems, patients are facing expenses caused by extra medical costs and a loss of wages. Zimmer has not come out and admitted its liability, but as patients file lawsuits against them, they have been making some settlements.
