The company was founded in 1908 by partners Stephen Foster Briggs and Harold M. Stratton. The founders initially thought of producing automobiles, but eventually settled on automotive components and small gasoline engines. Later on, they began making engines for washing machines and refrigerators. Briggs and Stratton engines are commonly used on lawnmowers, pressure washers, electrical generators, and other similar applications. Their original cast-iron engines were later on replaced with lightweight aluminum engines in 1953, which was the perfect answer for the rotary lawnmower due to its lower cost and lighter weight. This endeavor ultimately paved for the company’s success. During the sixties and seventies, they solidified their reputation by providing low cost Briggs and Stratton replacement parts and well designed manuals through independent central services distributors throughout the country.
