For more than a century people have sent one another cards to celebrate the day of their birth. Originally, birthday cards were more of an “I’m sorry” card; in the United Kingdom, they were given when the giver of the card was unable to get together with the person celebrating their birthday to give them their best wishes in person. So they sent an “I’m sorry” card as a way of an apology and to let them know that they do care. The tradition gained in popularity over time. These days we give cards to people celebrating their birthday even when we will be seeing them. Why? To let them know they are extra special.
