The 300 Yard Drive- Are Those 300 Yards Really Important?

I love going to the golf course. You see golfer after golfer handing over cash to get their wired yellow bucket with their trusty golf balls. The crash of the balls as they fall into their own bucket with the typical two left over at the end that drop to the cement as you jump to catch them. Don’t you love the golf course!

We march down the line inspecting each stall to see if it will satisfy our needs, settling on the one that feels just right and the rubber tee is just right. Then we gently set down our bucket next to the mat as to not disturb the two that are balancing on top that fell earlier. We un-mount our bags, and grab for the driver!! Well, at least this is what a garden variety golfer does.

After a few swings for warm-up, they grab the ball, place it carefully on the tee and WHAP! There it goes. They try to hit the ball as far as it will go. Shooting for that 300 yard drive again is the only think on their minds. Does this sound familiar?

We are all guilty of swinging as hard as possible. We all want a very long drive. We want to hear the oohs and aahs off the tee. We are human and we feed into the marketing noise out there that teaches us to want nothing than to hit the ball further! But, my friends, as we seek after the elusive long ball, we lose all balance and begin to play the game off our ego, which is by far the opposite approach anyone should have if they want to shoot a great game of golf.

Dont get me wrong, I totally understand wanting to hit that 300 yard drive. But, if you can only control it some of the time, whats the point? Remember that swinging for that 300 yard drive is NOT EASY and its prone to tons of errors.

In the end, I suggest everyone focus on control when driving the ball. Length and speed will come with practice. This is not a quick fix method that’s promoted by the media. This is a committed golfer’s mentality. You will find your ball in the fairway, you will have clean approaches to the green and you will start shooting lower scores.

It really gets on my wick when I see people at the golf range wacking ball after ball with their driver! The range is there to help you practise ALL your different types of club. I wish people would use it properly. Distance isn’t everything
