Stalking fish on the Texas Coast

Have you ever think why you can?t fish as good as how other people catch fish? There must be some explanations for this. To be successful in catching fish, you must go find the right fishing location, use the right lures (live or artificial), and be perfectly quiet while waiting for the fish to bite the bait. This is very important in fishing.

I always remind my customers that fishing has no difference with animal hunting. Whatever type of animal you would want to hunt or catch, you should always stay quiet and keep the silence. Silence will keep them still and prevent them from running away from you or from hiding in the bushes. The same way goes with fishing. Whether you are fishing for small trout or big trout, being quiet will not scare them away. So if you have company when you go fishing, tell them to remain quiet and avoid making other noises.

Next is location, location, location. Most folks think that the cleaner the water the better. Yes and no, this year I have caught more fish in the off-colored water than in the greener water we call “trout green”. This is not always the case, but this year it has been the ticket for us. From what I have seen, the off-colored water is holding the bait that the fish are feeding on.

When I say off-colored water, I am not talking chocolate milk. Just off-colored and not so green or clear. What I like to fish is a grass flat with the deeper water at the edge of the flat being off colored.

When I go fishing on the grass flat, I would rather wait for the tides. As the tide rises, the fish will come as well into the flats. On the deeper water, I use the Sea Devils by Brown Lures in the Amber color. Sometimes the Redfish would ignore the lures on the flats. What I usually do is to toss a hook right beside them and once they smell the lures, they will surely feed on it. This was the fishing experiences I have at the Matagorda Bay System.

See you all there this summer.
