Proper Pitching mechanics are essential to create a foundation to your pitching success. Pitching Mechanics will help you minimize the risk of injury, produce maximum pitching velocity and Increase the control on every pitch.

One thing you need to understand is that pitching mechanics are not the same for everyone. There are those pitchers who throw sidearm, three-quarter arm slot and others who throw at a ninety degree angle. One thing coaches need to consider when teaching young athletes appropriate mechanics is to ensure they never mess with the arm slot of a pitcher. Many coaches out there will look at a great pitcher like Nolan Ryan and try to mold each pitcher like him. That is a mistake, although there are great pitching mechanic lessons to learn from the master himself, Nolan Ryan, not everyone will have the same arm slot Nolan does, nor the tree trunk legs.

Can proper mechanics increase your pitching velocity? Absolutely! Most pitchers can throw harder than they do right now if they would just throw with their entire body as opposed to relying solely on arm strength for velocity. I see many pitchers, particularly young and inexperienced, using their arm to try and generate more velocity. This not only puts more stress on their throwing arms, but these pitchers are clearly not throwing with their full potential. I have seen many pitchers gain five miles an hour in a matter of minutes by changing a few quick mechanical errors.

In order for a pitcher to throw at a major league level much is required. Not only do proper mechanics play a big role, but great functional strength and flexibility. A pitcher who plays at this level needs a proper nutrition plan and good genetics. I mention good genetics because some pitchers who have a natural talent to throw the ball, dont seem to have much pain in their arms even with poor mechanics. They are blessed with a great arm. Any pitcher can avoid arm problems with proper throwing technique, but even if you have flawless mechanics, you can still have arm problems if you dont take care of yourself.

In conclusion, proper pitching mechanics are essential to establish consistency in control and velocity of every pitch. If you are a pitcher, make sure you take time and learn about biomechanics and you take pitching instruction from someone qualified in your area. It will be well worth your time and investment of money.
