These privately owned small lakes offer great opportunities for you to enjoy your holiday. Since anglers must pay to stay and fish in the waters, the resorts limit the number of anglers on a lake at any one time. Some of the limits are as small as groups of four to eight anglers. The lakes plan so that there are always extra swims in case you want to move to another area to fish. If you have a small group of friends, your group can own the lake for the week.
Carp are a very large fish. It is not uncommon to catch carp that weigh forty to fifty pounds in these private lakes. In some cases, carp have grown to over one hundred pounds. Since you will be fishing catch and release, you will want to be sure that you bring a camera.
In addition, you will want to bring with you the following equipment. If traveling presents a problem in bringing the equipment, many of the lakes will have rental equipment available.
Your fishing rod should be a minimum of six feet in length. It should be a medium action rod. Remember, that longer rods make it easier to land a big fish.
For a reel, you will need to choose either a spin casting reel or a spinning reel that has a good drag. The reel needs to hold 120 yards or more of 12 pound test fishing line.
Carp anglers use hooks from size 2 to 6. Since you will be fishing in a catch and release program, hooks should be without barbs. The particular lake where you fish may have specific rules on the hooks that can be used, so be sure that you check before you go.
When fishing for carp, remember that they will drop the bait at the slightest of resistance. For this reason, fishing corks are not generally used and only split shot or slip sinkers should be used to weight your line. This will help you to be more successful in your fishing.
If you want an indicator of a fish on your line, try a slit piece of Styrofoam slipped over the line somewhere between the guide of the rod and the reel. Leave the reel open and when the fish pulls the line the Styrofoam will fly off of the line to get your attention.
