Because of this, you should never use a fish aquarium, as this doesn’t allow air circulation in the air will become stale in your guinea pigs cage.
Next we’ll talk about the top of the cage. Especially if you have other pets in the home, or small children, you want to be sure to keep a top on the guinea pigs cage at all times. Again wire is recommended, although a sturdy plastic top will suffice just as well. The main idea is to protect your pet guinea pig.
The bottom of the cage should not be wire. Wire bottoms can cause pain to your guinea pigs feet, and can make it difficult to walk. What you do want for the bottom, is a smooth plastic surface it can easily be washed.
If it’s in your budget, the commercially available cages at major pet stores are ideal. These cages have been designed with guinea pigs in mind. They include all of these essentials that we have discussed. Therefore is an excellent option for purchasing a guinea pig cage.
Another thing that you want to consider in addition to the type of the cage that you purchase, will be where you put the cage. One place that you do not want to put the cage is directly on the floor, as there may be a draft, which can be unhealthy for your guinea pig. Choose a sturdy table or counter for the cage, being sure that the size of the table is at least as large as the base of the cage.
