A lot of people dream of owning a “wonder dog”. We adopt that puppy we fall in love with at the kennel, thinking that they will be another Lassie or Rin-Tin-Tin. However, things are a little different when we get our new pet home. Your puppy is incredibly excited, running all over the home. After a while, they stop and look at you affectionately, a puddle forming underneath.

It is essential for the sake of your household and friends that you have some control over your dog. Some people are under the belief that only the most expensive of pedigree dogs can be trained, but it is possible to train any breed of dog, and the young mongrel puppy may prove to be just as responsive to training. Some individual dogs, and some puppies of specific breeds or selected bloodlines, tend to train more easily than others, but it is not always the most intelligent dog that responds most favorably to human commands.

Smarter dogs, in fact will often bristle at being taught new things, being suspicious of your motives. These dogs will often have to be coaxed into responding appropriately ? you have to sell the dog on the benefits of the exercise and even after they learn the command may still have a little disdain for it.

Some dogs will immediately excel at obedience training ? they just love it! These dogs will always perform exceptionally well in dog training and will try to outdo themselves in their efforts to learn new tricks. If your dog is shy or nervous, though you may just need to come to terms with the fact that your dog is only going to master a few more simple commands.

Consider the temperament of your dog when determining how to train them and what kind of dog training would be most appropriate in their case. Dogs which are gentle, friendly and unafraid of new things will perform the best in dog training – but with patience, even a dog which was poorly trained as a puppy or one which has been neglected can learn appropriate behavior and become a loving member of your family.

Before you begin training your dog, you have to train the way you think. You can’t expect to train your dog the same way you might, for example, train your toddler to use the bathroom instead of his diaper.

We are different from our dogs ? humans can take in and analyze complex data to come to a conclusion, but a dog is only capable of mastering simple commands and tasks. Dogs also have very keen vision and smell as well as greater stamina than we do. When you know what makes your dog tick, it is easier to be successful with their dog training.

Remember that while your dog isn’t a human being, they are like you in that they are living, feeling creatures. Never place the blame on your dog. They are good at reading your emotional state and your reactions and will respond to them in their own way. For good or bad, the way you behave towards your dog determines how they will behave around you.
