28 May 2009As well as providing a decorative element to your property, garden fencing can offer a good level of security as well. There are two types of fencing that people will choose to install in their gardens to offer good levels of security for their home. They will either choose wrought iron or wooden privacy fencing. Below we look at what some of the advantages and disadvantages are to having either of these types of fencing installed.
Wrought Iron Fencing – In recent years we have seen an increased popularity in this kind of garden fencing. As well as helping to prevent unwanted visitors from gaining access to a garden it looks nice as well. This type of fencing does not have many decorative elements but still looks great and won’t make your garden feel too enclosed because of the gaps between the iron work.
For those who are looking to create a focal point in the space outside their home then this type of garden fencing should be considered. Not only does it look great but this type doesn’t need the same level of maintenance and care that others do to remain looking good. But you would be wise to regularly check it, say every year or so to ensure that the paint covering the iron is in good condition. If you find any paint missing treat the area with a good quality anti rust treatment before repainting it.
Wooden Privacy Fencing – This type of garden fencing is considerably cheaper to buy than wrought iron but unfortunately doesnt look as decorative. In fact this is utility fencing that again will prevent unwanted visitors from gaining access to your garden and home. Plus this type of fencing doesnt provide very much in the way of allowing additional natural light into your garden. Yet this type of fencing ensures that no one can easily see into your garden and into the back of your property.
The other thing you need to be aware of when it comes to this type of fencing that it does need to be maintained regularly to keep it looking good. It may be a case of each year having to apply a new coat of wood stain or paint to this fencing to prevent the elements from damaging it.
As mentioned above both of these types of garden fencing will prevent unwanted visitors including some animals from gaining access to your property. However, you need to be aware that before you install any type of fencing on your property you make sure that no planning permission is required if it goes above a certain height. Plus with the wooden type of fencing although you may be maintaining your side of the fence it doesnt mean your neighbour will as well.
