8 Jun 2009If you haven’t found the perfect area rug to embellish your floors with, this article is written for you. Here are the guidelines for picking out the right area rugs:
Which Room Will The Area Rug Go In?- Most area rugs are used in the living, family, dining, and bedroom areas. Since these are also the areas of the home with the most foot traffic, you’ll need an area rug that is made to last. For this reason, one of the most popular choices of fibers is wool. It’s one of the most durable of all the fibers used in creating area rugs and it holds the color dye well. Many of the wool rugs can last for generations.
Right Shape – area rugs are available in shapes other than the typical rectangular form. However, not all shapes are suited to all rooms. The size of the space is a consideration. A round or oblong rug is ideal for small rooms because these shapes don’t have sharp corners. On the contrary, a rectangular or square rug looks best in bigger rooms. For grand spaces, longer lengths and wider widths will work out well too.
Right Color and Design – the area rugs should match the theme and color of your home. A geometric pattern looks ill-fitted in a Victorian theme and a brightly-colored rug looks off in a formal receiving room even if the contrast of bright and dark shades looks attractive. Consider the over-all design of your home before placing area rugs here and there. If the room is already furnished with many decors, a simple rug will do. It will already complement nicely the rest of the room. On the other hand, if the room is quite bare, using an area rug with a bold color or noticeable design can make up for the lack of decorations.
Measure Once and then Once Again- Nothing would be worse than spending a lot of money on an area rug, only to get it home and find out it’s too small or too big for the room. Measure twice to ensure you have the proper measurements. If you don’t know exactly where you want the rug to be in the room, use newspapers to cover the area. Measure around the outside and use this as a guide when purchasing your area rug.
Finally, don’t forget that area rugs need their baths too. In due time, a brand new rug will wear out, get stains and eventually look old. Preserve their quality by regular vacuuming or washing. This is especially true for those positioned in high-traffic areas. Keep your area rugs clean.
Area rugs do give a home the added beauty boost, no doubt. But these items also need your tender loving care. Choosing the right rugs is just the first step. Maintaining them is another…and more important, especially if you no longer want to shell out any more bucks.
