This article will explore some of the alternatives to termites treatment involving fumigation and insecticides which may not be familiar to many of us. Fumigation and insecticides, although widely used across the USA and many foreign countries, are much maligned in that they pose risks of danger to the health and safety of people and pets. In addition, these techniques of exterminating termites pose environmental concerns.

Boric acid is one such application. It is dissolved in water and then painted on the affected area. Generally considered a preventive measure, it can help to control population of the colony. It may even keep an existing colony not only from growing but also from moving on to another location and this suggests that since the creatures life cycle is interrupted, they will eventually die off. However, most experts discount the value of this method as effective in getting rid of a large colony.

Microwaves is another rather recent method of getting rid of pesky insects. Best used for small infestations confined to a particular area, this method shoots rays into the wall or wood killing the insects in two to three days.

Very similar to microwaves, freezing involves pumping liquid nitrogen through tunnels constructed by the termites which freezes the insects to death. So far this technique has not gained wide acceptance. Its use is said to be limited to small infestations in particular areas which makes it unsuitable for most termite infestations.

Sticking with our Star Wars theme, another termites treatment which is gaining popularity is electricity which entails the use of electro-guns to shoot high voltage beams into the colony and literally zapping them to death. This treatment can be used for larger colonies in a relatively small space. However, for larger colonies spread out over a larger portion of your property, heat treatment is the preferred technique and that is why many states have authorized its use as the only lawful alternative to fumigation.
