You may think your childrens bedroom design built in the importance of fire safety. Please think again. Most people assume that fires dont start in kids bedrooms. So fire safety isnt a factor when choosing the bedroom furniture. In fact, though, kids room safety ” especially fire safety ” ought to be at the top of the list.

The numbers are tragic because each year about 500 kids 14 and under die in house fires. Also, in the year 2003 for example, the number of kids age fourteen and under who were treated for burns from house fires was 83,300.

Want some more stats? How about that kids under five years old are twice as likely to die in a house fire than children of any other ages. The absence of a smoke alarm (or one that works) are at way greater risk than homes that do have working alarms. Just make sure that there are plenty of working alarms in the house. Just as important is to ensure that the childrens bedroom furniture is up to regulation and that bedding is fire retardant.

Fireproof bedding shouldn’t be thought of as an option. The reason is that it adds time and when seconds can mean life, injury, or death it becomes extremely important. There’s a bunch more things you can do to prevent fires in the children’s bedrooms.

I dont want to insult your intelligence but matches and lighters are an absolute no-no. Even a sharp ten year old can accidently light something afire. Fires accidently start when kids are left to their own devices for extended periods in their rooms. Please ” no candles in the room.

And a huge fire starter is portable heaters. Please never leave one in a kids room unattended. Just keep the child with you where its warmer. The avoidance of tragedy is far more important than the inconvenience of your children bothering you or guests at your party.

Finally do some fire drills so the kids know what to do if the worst happens. If you cant get to them then make sure they know how to escape in a couple of different ways. Let them know that you will try to find them so they shouldnt try to find you or the baby sitter. The drill should give them just the little bit of confidence they need to avoid harm. Tell them where everybody is supposed to meet up then periodically practice ” usually about one a month.

A strong line of defense by using fire proof bedding and furniture coated with fire proof material in childrens bedrooms will help stop the injuries and death from house fires.

By doing all these things – and don’t forget to make sure exits are clear – you can avoid the nightmare of you child’s injury or death from a house fire.
