If your last backyard party was missing just that little something extra, why not change the afternoon bar-b-q into an evening out, and deck out the backyard with outdoor party lights to add just the right amount of pizzazz! Whether you are looking for a disco effect, or want to light up a quiet romantic evening, lighting plays a big part in the character of your backyard. An extra bonus to lighting your outdoor space is the added security it affords when you are not having an event.

Don’t let cost deter you if you are planning to light up a special occasion – there are plenty of cost effective options that are simple and quick to install, which will create a special look for your backyard party. This is especially true if you plan ahead and obtain seasonal lighting just after the season has ended – you can get some smoking deals on Christmas lights if you shop with a designer’s eye and choose lighting that can be used in any season. You can also occasionally make use of indoor lighting outside, but make sure not to leave indoor lighting exposed.

There are a number of different types of lightening you can use for your party. The lights you choose will depend on the type of party you are throwing, your budget and the location of the party. Try to think about your lightening scheme globally. Lighting schemes generally fail to achieve the desired effect if they are done in a piecemeal. Sometimes drawing a diagram can help you decide what the overall effect is going to be.

If you are planning your outdoor party lights for a special occasion, consider the guests you will have at your party. Will this be a family event with seniors and children; if so then more lighting will be required to ensure the safety of those with poor night vision, and to reassure children who may be afraid of the dark. You will also want to make sure to address specific areas where more light is required, such as food and drink areas, or live entertainment.

A romantic ambiance can very easily be achieved in your backyard by adding natural lighting such as candles, lanterns, or torches. Adding spotlights behind shrubs, or Christmas lights at the far end of your yard will light the area with an indirect subdued effect, perfect for a softly lit intimate event. The addition of one or two well placed lighting focal points will be all you need to complete the romantic feel.

Gatherings which are held at the summer cottage, whether that is at the seaside or lake, can add an entirely different dimension to your outdoor party lighting scheme, since you now have water to add to your lighting landscape. Playing with reflections and spotlights on water can create spectacular lighting effects. Even if you aren’t on a body of water, you could still play with underwater lighting and spotlights if you have a backyard water fountain or pool. Just keep in mind the safety factors when it comes to electricity and water, and keep any cords or receptacles well clear of water or wet areas.

Make sure to look for books and magazines that have examples of outdoor party lighting ideas before you plan your decorating project. If you think of your outdoor space in terms of a complete lighting project, you will be able to create a much nicer ambiance for your next backyard gathering, or even just for you to enjoy each evening by yourself.
