25 Nov 2009It was back in the year’46 and running some experiments on radar and related studies, Dr. Percy Spencer would make a discovery. While using the vacuum tube magnetron he noticed that a candy bar that was in his pocket melted. That made him curious so he placed some popcorn kernels near the tube to watch in amazement as they would begin to pop.
So by the next morning he decided to try the egg placing it close to the tube. The egg began to shake and tremor as the colleague moved to look a bit closer at the egg, it exploded! That’s how the idea first came about for the microwave.
Dr. Spencer would then make a metal box that he would place around the tube. This was when he noticed how much more energy would be inside the box. These steps are what would become what is well over a multimillion dollar idea. The first microwave oven that came out was an amazing 5 and a half feet tall and weighed more than 750 pounds. The cost of that first microwave was $5000!
It was shortly after that the first commercial microwave would be produced. It would be an amazing 750 pounds and stand at five and a half feet tall. The cost of this item would be $5, 000. It was something that many people even larger businesses weren’t too thrilled about spending money on. Plus the fact that you would need a plumbing hook up to help keep that internal tube cooled didn’t help out much.
Then came the first radarange, this was made for homes, unlike the first commercial use microwave that had been produced. At least the price was a bit less expensive only around $2, 000 to $3, 000 each. While the prices would go down through the years until now you can buy a microwave for sometimes $100 and get a nice buy.
When you look at microwaves today the prices are way below that and the sizes are nowhere near where they once were. Even the differences that you can get in watt usage make these up to date modern appliances miles ahead of their predecessors.
Of course you will need to compare not only the prices of the microwave ovens you are considering buying. Check to make sure you have some sort of warranty on the item. With any appliance, you can never be sure if something may go wrong, so it’s wise to get something with a warranty on it. There are different sizes and watt usage that you can find today and all at very reasonable prices.
