People like rugs because they’re soft, and in a way one in the kitchen is like a soft and comforting oasis on a linoleum desert. Polypropylene rugs are soft, but it is not as soft as ones made with some other materials.
The space available in a kitchen is going to limit your choices. Is your kitchen spacious or cramped? Many people choose to get a kitchen area rug that is sort of like a walkway that goes from entrance to the sink or dinner table. These are good if you want to walk on a soft surface in the most used areas of the kitchen, and it they can also keep the rugs from getting too dirty from every day usage as well. If you are not trying to get one that is like a walkway, you could just find rug that will fit in front of your fridge or could go under your dinner table and chairs. While having themed decorations all over your kitchen goes a long way, a themed kitchen area rug can really pull everything together easily. A little mess in the kitchen once in a while is not going to destroy the rug, and with proper care you can keep it looking in top shape as any other rug in the your home for years to come.
