10 Dec 2009If you are a man who is losing his hair, most likely it has been a very gradual process. Most male pattern baldness is. Most men try to overlook it as long as possible until it is too late and they have already lost the majority of their hair. This can make them look older than they really are. Instead of waiting, men should consider hair loss treatments. This is because most work much more effectively if they are started when there is still a large amount of hair left. Here is a look at some of the hair loss treatments that are available.
If surgery is something you want to leave as a last resort, there are effective topical products you can use. Most, regardless of the brand name, are simply variations of the drug Minoxidil. One of the more well known brand names of this generic drug is Rogaine. Topical products such as Rogaine are rubbed into the scalp and allowed to sit for a specific amount of time in order to achieve hair regrowth.
Although it is very effective, it can also cause skin irritation because of the alcohol base that the product uses. This can often be aggravated by the long amount of time that the product has to sit on the skin itself. And you may find that you need to keep paying for these pricey products because once you stop using them, your hair loss will resume and any new hair will fall out again.
There are permanent solutions as well but they involve surgery. These surgical options include hair transplants, skin flaps and hair plugs. Hair transplants and hair plugs involve taking hair from areas on the head or even the body where it is quite thick, and moving them to areas where there is thinning hair or even a lack of hair. Skin flap methods involve cutting away hairless areas and stretching the scalp that does have hair over the space. It is then sewn in place and you once again have a full head of hair.
All of these may sound drastic and all have the risk of side effects. These can be more of a possibility if the procedures are not performed by a licensed and experienced professional. An individual undergoing hair replacement surgery may react negatively to the anaesthetic being used, or any other prescribed medications. There is also the risk of infection in any surgical procedure. The final risk, which is more of a problem with hair flaps or hair transplants is that there can be noticeable scarring as well.
Whatever the side effects, many men still opt for hair loss treatments to give them a full head of hair. Each individual has to weigh the pros and cons and select the method that works best for them.
