15 Dec 2009If you’re like most people, window coverings really don’t mean much to you, at least not when it comes to someone else’s home. You probably don’t think about what they spent or what kind of coverings they have unless you were with them when they bought it or they’ve got something very attractive that you have complimented them on. Chances are you can’t even recall what color their window treatments are. Unless they’ve got vertical blinds, you probably haven’t given their furnishings a second thought.
Either they get inexpensive metal horizontal window blinds or they have curtains that match the sofa and love seat. I’ve never been one for the whole matching thing so if she has those, I’ve turned a blind eye to it. If, however, she had vertical window blinds, I’d remember.
Add another dimension to your living and working spaces when you use vertical blinds to help you maintain desired room temperature and light. Verticals let you decide how much sunshine pours into the room or if you prefer none at all. People who live in the city will appreciate the way that verticals keep out the light unlike other window blinds and shades.
One nice thing about vertical blinds is that you can keep your windows open and still have great protection from your window blinds. You’ll be able to feel the cool afternoon breezes without hearing the clank of metal horizontal blinds crashing all around you. Many times, vertical blinds are placed in between double sets of doors to provide an extra layer of privacy.
Other kinds of window coverings will blow around and get all torn up if you want a fair amount of air to come through without drawing them all of the way open, especially horizontal shades or window blinds. We’ve all seen metal horizontals that are bent and look awful because they’ve blown in the breeze and gotten literally bent out of shape. Have you ever noticed how dirty horizontal window blinds get?
Anyway, when I got my first house, I couldn’t wait to go out and buy window coverings. I like my privacy and even though the nearest neighbors were a good distance away from my house, I don’t like walking around my house thinking, “Can they see me?” So, I expected that I’d find that I couldn’t afford vertical blinds, that I’d be stuck with the ugly metal clanging type of window blinds or shades. I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that I could afford to get very attractive and easy to hang verticals!
Other window coverings are pretty much all or nothing when it comes to letting in light and air, too. You’ve either got to draw them all of the way shut or leave them wide open to get the sunlight and breeze you want. If this is the case, why do you even have them? If you want to let different amounts of light and air into your living spaces, vertical blinds are definitely the way to go.
If you can’t find vertical blinds in the size you need, it’s no problem. Buy the next size up and have them professionally cut to fit your window spaces!
