There are a number of places that you can keep a personal first aid kit, including in your car, the workplace, at home and on your person in case you should encounter any type of minor medical needs. Sometimes insect bites, sprains, cuts and other injuries occur without warning and they should be properly treated to prevent a minor mishap from turning into a major problem.

A personal first aid kit should contain a variety of supplies necessary to provide first aid for a minor situation. You will need to be able to treat the wounds until you can seek professional medical care. As such, the kit should contain items that provide pain relief, support a fracture or a sprain, help with controlled breathing and have a means for opening a breathing passage in a more serious situation. The kit may vary according to its needs, purpose or its location.

To be prepared to deal with any type of medical situation, its helpful to know cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and to recognize symptoms to common medical conditions and being able to treat them. Ideally, everyone should know how to provide basic medical care. This information is available by reading first aid books or viewing medical emergency videos.

Here is a list of important items to put into your personal first aid kit. A variety of bandages, tweezers to remove splinters, alcohol pads, antiseptic ointments, sterile gauze, burn creams, butterfly closure strips, antihistamine, pain medication, moleskin, elastic bandage wraps, a face mask for performing CPR, paper, tape, scissors and non-latex gloves.

When you are planning a hunting or willderness adventure, the contents of your personal first aid kit will need to reflect the challenge. The basics will not be sufficient for you, and you should add items such as anti-itch ointment, rehydration salt, treatment for anaphylactics shock, advice on the treatment of gunshot wounds, arrow injuries or fishhook removal. Adjust the contents of your kit according to the length of your outing.

It is often daunting to think about making your own, so most people opt to purchase a ready-made medical kit. In this way, everything that they will initially need is included and they will just need to replenish as they go. The kits will also come in a sturdy waterproof container.

Its important with a personal first aid kit to replace any items or medications that are beyond the expiration date. Also do a periodic check to ensure items are not damaged or that packages containing sterile bandages or other sterile items are not torn.

Consider a personal first aid kit a valuable tool for treating and preventing common ailments like wounds, infections, blisters, minor trauma, headaches, colds, and allergies. It is something that should be portable and within easy reach to use, especially among parents with young children.
