You might be surprised at how important kitchen cabinets are when it comes to the overall look of your kitchen. Unfortunately the designs and trends that were once in style don’t last forever; neither does paint or stain. But if you don’t have the cash, what can you do when your kitchen needs an update? Well, there are a few tricks to use to update your kitchen cabinet doors, and you don’t have to spend a lot of cash to do it.

The easiest way to create a whole new updated look for your cabinets is to simply get new door handles or knobs. Often the handles or knobs quickly make the doors look old and outdated. If you replace them once in a while you’ll be able to update your kitchen a bit for just a few dollars. Plus its always great to get new hardware on the doors. Just make sure you replace old knobs with new knobs or old handles with new handles.

As you’re looking for replacement handles or knobs, be sure and hit up the flea markets and bargain stores first, where you’ll be able to save a few (and probably more) dollars by buying someone else’s old handles or knobs. All you’ll need to do with them is clean them up. They’ll be as good as new! This usually works great, because chances are there’s probably nothing wrong with them; the previous owner just didn’t like them any longer. As the saying goes, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

You should also think about repainting or re-staining the doors, which is also a great way to update your cabinets. All you have to do is sand off the old paint or stain and apply a fresh coat. When you do the doors, however, don’t forget to do the fronts of the cabinets themselves so that they match. Obviously this option is going to take a bit more time and work, but the results that you’ll enjoy will be just as satisfying as buying completely new cabinets.

If you just don’t feel like re-doing them with new paint or stain, you could also easily replace the doors of the cabinets. You should be able to find a variety of doors that would go well with your existing cabinets, which you can replace with a newer, updated look. The overall look of your cabinets is primarily based on the doors themselves, not the entire cabinet, replacing just the doors is an excellent way to clean up and update your kitchen without spending a good deal of money.

If you haven’t already, you’ll soon find out that updating your kitchen can get pretty expensive. That’s why you shouldn’t waste the extra cash by buying brand new cabinets when you can simply update them with very little money and work. Another option might even be to hire a contractor to build just new cabinet doors for about half the price it would cost for all new cabinets. Why just the doors? Because most likely there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the cabinets themselves. Don’t replace what isn’t broken! Use a little imagination and create a whole new look for your kitchen for less cash than the cost of new cabinets.
