There are several different materials that you can use for creating dramatic changes in your walls. Hanging a portrait is fine and all but there are many more ways for you to make a bolder statement. Collages, photos, wall ornaments, even area rugs can all make some sort of statement when used as wall decor. When choosing the kind of embellishment to use, always consider the magnitude of the wall compared to the rest of the room.

The biggest problem that most people have is decorating their walls enough. Some add too much, while yet others will only have a few items on the wall leaving it a bit bare. But you can add more color and texture to the wall, and create a special feeling of warmth and comfort too.

Collages, for example, are a very unique idea to cover up a large chunk of space on the wall. You can use any variety of images that strikes your fancy, from Hawaiian vacation postcards to old family photos. Collage projects are very simple and fairly easy to do: you start by cutting out the photos and gluing them onto a poster board.

Here’s where your imagination comes in. Cut the photos or the board in all sorts of shapes or use scrapbooking materials as accents. Once you’re done, you can opt to get it framed or create the frame yourself with poster frames available in craft stores. All this might sound like a lot of hard work, but making a collage is a great chance to display all your family photos and turn them into a conversation piece. It is something you can create with the rest of the family and it is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to art. And the best part of all is that the whole things could cost less than $20.

Another option that you could install on your walls are readymade wall hangings. These are available at home decor stores and come in various designs and materials including glass or wood. They are also very easy to mount and, aside from being wall decoration, also serve as holders for candles and other decorative items. Mirrors are another option that work very well in most rooms; large mirrors even have the added benefit of making a room seem much larger.

Who said that rugs were just for the floor? One eye-catching way to embellish your wall is to use an area rug as wall decor. Persian rugs, for example, are exotically beautiful when draped over one section of wall. The fine textures and intricate details give them all the appeal of paintings, without the cliche. But if you can’t afford a Persian rug, any type of area rug with a great design will do to add life and color to your walls.

Creativeness and trying different things will make a room look like nothing you’ve seen before. It will create a great conversation piece too. So try something new and see how you can fix the walls of any room in your home.
