My hope is to break down the different kinds of sheds into a simple enough system so you can easily access what you need and then, relatively quickly, tell what kind of shed will be the most cost effective for that need and the most durable for your area. But before I can do this effectively, there are a couple of things that need to be addressed on your end before you ever consider buying or building a storage unit.

The two most important things you will have to address is the space you need for the size shed you require and the laws that allow you to put a shed up in the first place. The space is just a matter of going out and doing a little measuring but you will need to call your local codes department to find out what you have to do or have to either build or install a shed on your property.

Once you are clear and good to go, make a trip to the library or your favorite local hardware store and look through books and magazines that show you some wooden sheds you might like to build. You will have to make the assessments about this being within your skills set or not. If it is not, please don’t try it. You’ll be calling one of those TV rescue programs to help you get it finished. Just pass on this being a way to get the storage building of your dreams.

If you are dead set on a wooden shed, go look at the hardware store and see if they have the size you want in the price range you want to pay. You may also want to take a moment and find out what kind of maintenance you will be performing on a semi annual basis with a wood building as well. I mention this because people forget that termites are an issue in much of the country and they will eat the wood of your shed just as fast as they will eat any other wood you have laying around. You will also have to paint it to keep it looking as good as when you started.

If maintenance is an issue, you will want to take a look at the plastic sheds on the market today. They are very popular because they come to your home as a kit that is pretty easy to put together. You will need to make arrangements for a foundation on level ground and once that is done the installation normally takes no longer than a day.

These plastic sheds have a very good lifespan with little to no maintenance. You can spray it off as little or as much as you want but most people hose it down once or twice a year and that’s it. You will want to make sure it meets the required snow load and wind rating in certain areas of the country but other than that these great little buildings work well.

Also don’t forget to look at metal buildings as an option especially if cost is your main factor. Metal buildings tend to be a bit more flexible in regard to the foundation as well and can be placed right on the ground as long as it is level ground. Most of these sheds do well unless they get scratched or bent since once that metal is penetrated rust can take hold. You will need to watch it and make sure you catch any potential rust spots and treat them accordingly.

It’s really a pretty forward and easy process as long as you start with the size and make sure you have everything you need as far as permits and permission to build or install a storage building from your city or association. Once that is done the rest is just making sure you find the best solution for you and your family.
