13 Jun 2009Solar power is good for supplying energy but will it work for heating a hot tub? A hot tub needs constant energy to keep the water warm and so if you live in a place where there is a lot of sun, perhaps the sun could be used to heat it. Unfortunately, while this sounds like a good idea, in practicality it doesnt work too well.
For a hot tub to run only on solar power, you would have to live somewhere where the sun is out all the time. Since this rules out most of the country, there just isnt enough demand for manufacturers to make one. Additionally, solar panels are expensive and there would have to be a way to have enough space to put the solar panels to get the job done. These factors all work against the production of solar hot tubs.
Nevertheless, a hot tub that can be partially powered by the sun sounds like a great idea to many people. If you can get the right solar panels and have enough knowledge to hook them up to the hot tub and have them contribute to the energy source, it is possible to have a makeshift solar tub. Again though, totally using the sun to heat it will not work because there just isnt enough sun to get the job done.
A solar hot tub cover is something you may want to buy that will help with keeping the water warm. You can get covers that have solar cells on them and the help transfer energy to the water and the cover also helps prevent heat from escaping. It is possible to find this kind of cover at places online and you might be able to find something like this at a local store. However, not too many places sell solar cells, panels, or covers.
Solar hot tubs may never find their way onto the market because of the lack of demand. No matter how good an idea is, if you cant make money with it no one will bother to make it. Hot tubs powered by the sun fall into this category and the best you may ever be able to do is to buy solar panels and hook them up to your hot tub.
