24 May 2009Following decorating guidelines can help you achieve your desired design for your home. Here are some of the most important things to remember:
The wise people, including professional interior decorators would say that you should not allow other people to make decorating decisions for you. In fact, even these professionals only do what their clients asked them to do. They make suggestions and offer alternatives but the last say is always the homeowners’. You. It’s your house we’re talking about and there’s no better person to decide than the one who will be spending the most time in that house.
With this in mind, you should make sure that you do not paint first. The thing with paint is that you can buy any color you can possibly think of when it comes to paint. Before you start paining, choose your furniture, paintings, and carpets first. After all, you may find a set of rugs that you love but they don’t match the walls or the drapes that you have been fantasizing about for the last six months. Keep in mind that whenever you are choosing your paint not to choose it from a paint chip at the store. Paint samples look different against the other colors of paint and under the fluorescent lights. When you have a color in mind buy the smallest quantity possible and paint a small section of your wall so you can see what it looks like under the natural light in your home.
You should not settle for things you think are just okay. Go for things you like! Color, design, decors, etc. If you dig the bright and bold hues, so what if your parents are rallying dark colors or if your friends all have neutral shades? Remember, it’s your house, therefore your choice. Besides, it’s not as if you’ll cover your entire house with your chosen color say, red. You might want a relaxing room so red won’t give you that. But you love red! So you can just accent with red color. For instance, trimmings on the walls, cushions and other fabrics, flowers and accessories.
To make a room look more appealing, create a focal point. It can be an area rug in the middle of the room, chandelier, furniture set, entertainment center or an oversized antique chair. A focal piece is an instant eye-catcher and you can make this as a basis for arranging the furniture and decorating the room.
Use items that appeal to you. Price doesn’t exactly matter. There are for instance, so many great finds in discount stores and flea markets. Depending on your taste, use items that meet your theme and your style. Do away with things you no longer use or have no penchant for. This will help you unclutter and allot more space for things you actually fancy.
