28 Oct 2009The time for research is past. You really know that the benefits of omega 3 fish oil to your health are so significant that it’s time to stop thinking about it and start taking daily fish oil supplements. But now that you’ve decided to buy you’ve discovered that there is a plethora of omega 3 supplements on the market. How do you decide which are the best fish oil supplements?
Here’s 4 things for you to use to make a comparison between the different brands of fish oil supplements.
1. Must compare the supplements by the amount of DHA in each.
DHA and EPA are the 2 essential fatty acids known as Omega 3 fatty acids that result in all the health benefits from taking supplements. DHA is the most important of these 2.
Fish oil is not 100 percent DHA. Read the label on the bottle and you should see what percentage of the fish oil is made up of DHA. This is what you are buying. If the label says nothing you don’t know what you’ll be getting.
Some brands of Omega 3 supplements have less than 10 percent DHA whilst others have almost 30 percent.
2. Don’t compare fish oil capsules by price compare by value.
It is impossible to compare capsules by price purely because it’s only the DHA that you’re buying and there is widely differing amounts of DHA in different capsules. You cannot compare the price of an 8 percent DHA capsule with a 28 percent DHA capsule. The only way to compare fish oil supplements is on a cost per gram of DHA basis.
3. Consider the freshness of the oil used in the supplements.
Fish oil can go off and it will go off. Once it does so it is rancid and it will smell bad and most likely you will experience that fishy burp sensation after you take the capsules. There are even manufacturers that mask the smell of rancid fish oil with masking fragrances. You must choose fish oil supplements that use the freshest oil.
And fish oil that has gone off and is rancid is not good for your health.
4. You must consider the cleanliness of the oil.
It is well known that fish are contaminated with such toxins as mercury, PCBs, pesticides and heavy metals. The most contaminated fish come from the north Atlantic and the cleanest fish come from the ocean the furthest away from any people, the southern ocean between New Zealand and Antarctica. The best fish oil capsules use oil sourced from fish from the southern ocean and use two separate processes to ensure that there are no detectable levels of contaminants at all. Then they have their oil tested by an independent laboratory and publish the certificate of analysis on their website.
If you do all these comparisons will find there is one brand of fish oil with 28 percent DHA, that uses clean fish from the southern ocean, that publishes a certificate of analysis showing no contamination at all in their fish oil and which uses the freshest fish oil it’s possible to get. And it’s the cheapest on a value comparison.
