Stop Snoring With Lifestyle Changes

Can one stop snoring? In order not to put the cart before the horse, what we must first respond to is another more basic question: what is and what causes snoring? Snoring occurs due to obstruction around the pharynx (the conduit in the throat that air passes through when moving from the nose to the lungs and back) or nasal activity as you breathe in and out in your sleep.

The obstruction is what causes that deep, vibrating snore. It can be caused by a pharynx that is too narrow, by nasal congestion, age, obesity, or several other reasons. Therefore, in order to figure out how to stop snoring, you must identify the cause.

A lot of people snore. It is a common affliction among people all over the world. Snoring affects the person who snores and also affects anyone within earshot when he is sleeping. This could be the spouse, kids, roommates, parents, or sleeping partner. With so many people being affected, it is no wonder the push is on to find a snoring cure. Snoring affects the quality of your sleep and that of your partner, thus denying you the rest that sleep is supposed to provide. Sometimes, the snoring presents a significant strain on relationships. To stop snoring, you may need to make a number of lifestyle changes. For instance, you may need to reduce your consumption of alcohol. Secondly, regular exercise to reduce weight is important; sometimes the snoring is as a result of the accumulation of fatty tissue around your neck, thus making clear breathing during sleep difficult. In this case, the exercise will need to be accompanied by a healthy diet that may entail reducing or completely avoiding fatty foods. Another cause of snoring is excessive smoking and if you find that this is the cause of your problem, you may need to kick the habit.

Next, your sleep posture is important. One way to stop snoring is by raising the position of your head relative to the rest of the body. You can do this by either getting an adjustable bed that allows you to raise the head and upper torso (though this may be an expensive option and may create a hospital-like environment to the bedroom) or using a large pillow. Overall, sleeping with your head and torso raised will lead to a smoother flow of air.

If none of the about natural stop snoring remedies work, you should talk to your doctor. He will be able to advise you about over-the-counter or prescription medication that might be able to help you stop snoring. If medication does not help, your doctor may want you to undergo surgery as a permanent snoring cure.
