30 Jun 2009Chemical skin peeling has existed for a few years now, but has only recently come to the limelight through the offering of new, less toxic chemicals and safer procedures that result in better skin renewal and the removal of unsightly wrinkles.
The goal of a peel is to leave the skin smoother, more even in texture and tone, with less wrinkling. The newer combinations of peels add in antioxidants that make them stronger, yet more tolerable to the client. Newer techniques also allow for peels of different strengths to be used at one time to permit a deeper peel on one part of the face or treatment site, and a more superficial peel at another, more delicate, site.
For example, a deeper peel on the face may be combined with a lighter peel under the eyes, or a deeper peel over specific wrinkles or scars and a lighter peel for the face as a whole. This allows for an even peel on the entire treated site and a stronger effect where needed. This is what makes the treatments special and why it is so important to have an experienced physician providing the treatment.
The treatment of chemical skin peeling revolves around the natural exfoliation cycle that human skin goes through where skin flakes off over a period of time. The chemical peeling process is merely an intervention to accelerate this exfoliation process and breakdown bonds between skin cells using special chemicals. The new skin that appears is more toned and more youthful than the older skin. To help the process of new skin development, skin-peeling agents contain special chemicals to help new skin regenerate faster and heal itself. Given the relatively mild nature of this treatment, anesthetics are not usually considered during the treatment. However, certain sedatives may be given during the procedure and for a short period of time to alleviate any discomfort during and after the procedure.
In addition, plastic surgeons have recently started offering a combination of treatments involving skin peeling, laser treatments and other minor cosmetic procedures. These combinations typically allow for a more versatile outcome and are more likely to meet specific needs of clients.
Modern technology has propelled skin peeling procedures to the forefront of cosmetic treatments since the procedure is generally non-invasive and hence extremely safe. Furthermore, the procedure requires minimal time for clients to get the treatment and return to work in an extremely short period of time. However, it is still strongly suggested to have the procedure done under the supervision of a professional aesthetic physician.
