23 Aug 2009Many people think that snoring does not count as a serious health problem. However, health experts believe that snoring is often a sign of some other serious health issue like sleep apnea and that sufferers must turn to common snoring remedies. Sleep apnea is a condition wherein a person experiences episodes of interrupted breathing during sleep. This disrupted breathing is often caused by insufficient amounts of oxygen circulating around the body and is characterized by gagging or choking. In severe cases, sufferers need to endure interrupted sleep. It is common for sufferers not to be aware of these snoring and choking episodes.
We might be snoring and do not know it. Or we might be living with someone who snores and find this noisy habit annoying. In any case, it is never fun to be around a snorer. Not only is it somewhat dangerous for the snorer, other people find it irritating to hear someone snoring when they should be getting a good night’s rest.
Is there a way to deal with snoring habits? While snoring can keep you from having well-deserved rest, there are ways for you or your family member or your significant other or your friend to avoid this noisy habit. One of the most common snoring remedies is elevating your head through sleeping on multiple layers of pillows or a thicker pillow. You will also need to avoid alcoholic beverages, sleeping pills, antihistamines, and tranquilizers before going to sleep. They tend to make your muscles relax, which can result to a narrower air passage way. You will also need to avoid the intake of dairy products, like milk, right before you go to bed. They often cause mucus buildup and can easily clog your air passages.
Being overweight also contributes to making you a snorer. If you weigh more than the ideal weight for your height, it is time that you take on some weight management measures. Losing weight can help reduce snoring because it increases the space in your air passages. Other helpful snoring remedies include sewing a tennis ball to the back of your shirt to keep you from sleeping on your back, following a regular sleep routine, sleeping on a firmer pillow, and inhaling steam before going to sleep or sleeping in a room with a humidifier that has been turned on.
Of all these many snoring remedies, people find quitting smoking as the most effective way. A lot of smokers become snorers because smoking causes swelling and inflammation along the air passages making it harder for you to breathe when you sleep. You can also consult your doctor for products and surgical methods that can help you stop that snoring habit.
