10 Jul 2009You’ve got too much hair on your back, chest, and face. You may be experiencing hair loss and have a receding hairline that’s getting worse with time. You haven’t been able to get pregnant and have gray/brown skin patches on your elbows, armpits, knees, and neck. Your armpits and/or neck have mushroom like over growths of skin called skin tags.
If you are experiencing these symptoms, then you are suffering from a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS. There is a connection between having PCOS and being insulin resistant. Insulin resistance occurs when the body doesn’t properly respond to insulin in the blood which causes insulin levels to build up.
The increased insulin builds up testosterone which causes you to gain weight around the midsection. Too much insulin causes liver damage, diabetes, and causes the arteries to clog. It is also responsible for the symptoms stated previously at the introduction of this article.
The long term effect of this damage is not good. If you don’t make an effort at controlling your insulin level, diabetes and cardiovascular disease can result.
Fortunately, your insulin levels can be lowered naturally through “healthy living”. This means getting plenty of aerobic exercise that causes your heart rate to increase as well as weight resistance exercises that builds your muscle mass.
It means eating a healthy, natural diet that consists of eating fruits and vegetables, fish, poultry, and lean meats. Stay away from processed foods and simple carbohydrates such as white bread, cookies and cakes, refined rice and pasta.
You should avoid consuming too much food. Try a salad before you begin your meal since this fills your stomach and reduces food consumption.
Try to reduce the level of stress in your life. Too much stress, regardless of it’s source, upsets your hormone balance. This can lead to weight gain around the middle of your body.
Perhaps the most important advice is not to go it alone. An experienced health professional is needed tell you exactly what to do. A PCOS support group is needed for emotional support which will make it easier to stick with your program.
