2 Mar 2009Omega 3 supplements. Do you take them? There’s good reasons to do so, but there’s problems too.
Omega 3 supplementation is one of the biggest businesses in the nutritional supplements industry. Omega 3 tablets are huge sellers, and for good reason. Omega 3 fatty acids are good for you.
Lets look at what omega 3 is and why you ought to take omega supplements, and also have a look at the downside as well.
You remember the health advice from the past. Keep your intake of oils and fats down. Gradually science is beginning to understand that there are good fats, and bad fats, and the better advice is to reduce the intake of bad fats and increase the intake of good fats.
Animal fats are saturated fats, and these are the bad fats. So meat and other animal products like eggs and milk contain bad fats, and your intake should be limited.
But along with bad fats there are also good fats like omega 3 which is rich in a substance called DHA.
Omega 3 oils are found in fish, not animal products, particularly oily fish. Much is sourced from deep sea fish. And it contains a substance known as DHA, or Docosahexaenoic acid. Sorry for the long name.
DHA is a fatty acid that is one of the important fats in our bodies, and which makes up a large part of our brain. It is responsible for growth of the brain in infants and for brain function in adults.
Deficiencies in DHA in our brains can lead to brain function impairment, and even brain function deterioration like Alzheimers and dementia with aging.
So if we can add to our store of DHA by taking omega 3 dietary supplements, either as general nutritional supplements or even as a specific omega 3 tablet, this has got to be good.
And it’s not just our brain. Evidence for omega 3 supplementation includes reduction in heart disease, improvement in arthritis, improvement in diabetes, reduction in athreroschlerosis and more.
So as you can see there are good reasons to supplement your diet with omega 3. And eat fish.
Now to the dark side, because there’s a problem. You would think deep sea fish would be extremely clean, but it isn’t. There is plenty of evidence that fish can be polluted with various pollutants like PCBs and mercury, and more. And even in krill, and some omega 3 is sourced from krill.
So it’s wise to make sure you choose EXTREMELY CAREFULLY before you choose a supplier of omega 3 supplements, because not all are as good as each other.
So yes there are extremely powerful reasons to add omega 3 supplements to your diet. But remember, not all omega 3 capsules are equal, you may be doing yourself more harm than good.
There is one company that makes the best omega 3 supplements, and they make sure they exceed all the standards. But they aren’t on the shelves of your local store.
So you can see that there are excellent reasons to make sure that you take an omega 3 daily dietary supplement, but only one that is clean.
Make sure you choose your omega 3 carefully.
