11 Jul 2009Politics is the definitely the game played in the UIGEA legislation. The question in this legislation is that online gaming should be legalize, control or ban fully. Its also quiet famous that this policy in question is a lobbyist issue. However, it is known by the politicians themselves that this issue does not influence the general populations because it has little effect in their lives. But there are significant small groups that are very keen on this issue.
These radicals that place our Senators and members of U.S. Congress in a very awkward position; politically speaking. On one hand, they all have individual positions on the issue and a constituency to address for; and then again they have particular involvement groups -who fund their political campaign pressuring them on their choices.
For example, a Congressman on his first term from a district who’s generally Republican who have won the preliminaries with only a small amount against his opponent. Showing support in the supporters who are anti UIGEA policy will definitely kill their career in an instant. This is because there are small right wing group who supported this policy like the Focus on the Family and Christian Coalition who are anti gambling factions. Going against this group will not be good for their political career since they can influence the votes of the general population. They will also be guaranteed not to see another term on their career if they will show they are pro online gaming.
On The other hand, a conservative Republican or Democrat could face the same pressures from the other side.
The point here is that our politicians will not based their decision for this legislation based on their personal preference but they will pick out the decision that will give them the greatest political advantage when election comes. They just have to support the small interest group that will support and fund their political career since the general population does not really care for this particular legislation.
