The starting point is to be scrupulous in recording all of the passwords your PDF files require, and to keep this list in a very safe place. One particularly elegant solution to the problem is to save the PDF files on to your computer as you receive them and rename the files with the password built into the file name.

If you are still cursing at the computer and missing that password then the next simplest solution is to ask the sender of the file to send the password again. If you are supposed to be looking at what is in the file then this won’t be too much of a problem.

Another option might be just to try to guess the password. This may be possible if you know the originator and have some insight into ones they normally use. If you are simply guessing blind though, be warned that a four digit numeric code has ten thousand combinations, and if this is expanded to include letters then the possible combinations reach nearly half a million!

The last option is to admit defeat and download a commercial PDF password finder. There are loads of these about and you should get the result that you are looking for. They’re surprisingly cheap, efficient and will save you a lot of hassle and frustration.
