22 Feb 2009The array of GPS systems available to the consumer is swiftly moving and ever-changing. In the world of navigational systems, ’smaller is better’ is the motto. It seems consumers expect increasingly smaller and faster global positioning systems.
Everybody hates a traffic jam, and I suspect this is one of the major reasons GPS for the car are so popular now. Being able to get rerouted around a wreck on the highway is such a nice benefit of GPS units. But the excuse that you are late for a meeting because you got lost will no longer work. Oh well, at least we don’t have to waste gas driving around looking for a station. Gas station locations are embedded right into the GPS data.
Global positioning units are now an indispensible tool for anyone in corporate management circles. Since business meetings can happen in any city from coast to coast, it is essential to be self-sufficient in the destination city. With a navigational device you can easily find the restaurants and coffee shops that you need to survive those day-long seminars in a strange city.
Outdoor sports have greatly benefited from the availability of affordable hand held GPS units. An entire new sport has been created, check out geocache. Hiking and camping are both safer now as outdoor explorers can find their way back to their base camp or a shelter. Hand held GPS units are getting cheaper and cheaper, and are also getting more and more features. More hikers are able to afford these units.
It is amazing how many applications are now being combined in consumer navigational devices. If you have ever thought of a combination application for GPS, rest assured there is probably some engineer designing your device as you are creating it in your mind. The growth of global positioning units has been and continues to be phenomenal.
The cellular phone combined with GPS capabilities is by far the best-selling combination GPS product available today. Why did the iPod 3G get so popular so fast? Due to its use of GPS, mobile phone, and the ability to use the internet, all in one hand held unit. Wonder what will be next?
The entire sport of fishing has changed due to Fish Finders. Fish finders are increasing in popularity. These units use sonar signals to locate fish under or next to a boat. And of course you can get the GPS coordinates of your location to remember that great new spot for next time.
Golf is also being changed by the GPS revolution. The affordable, hand held GPS range finders are getting very popular now and many golfers now say they would never golf without one again. I still think there is a large segment of golfers who would rather do things the old-fashioned way, and you will never get them to buy one of the GPS golf rangefinders.
Don’t miss out on the GPS Revolution! It is here to stay!
