16 Sep 2009The odds are your young child will come home one day and out of the blue ask for a cell phone. You see, in every classroom of kids, one of them will be the first to get a cell phone and when they do, everyone will want one. Fortunately, there are cell phones that are made specifically for young children and teens.
Cell phones for children should be easy to understand, simple to use, and not have too many features. Programmable buttons are great because you can put in the important numbers you want your child to have access to. You wont have to worry about them having to imput the numbers themselves or find them on a scrolling screen of numbers.
Rather than get a plan where you have to keep track of minutes, it might be advisable to get one for your child that is prepaid. This will remove the possibility of them charging up a big bill and it will keep you, the parent, in control. Even if it is only for a short time while they learn how to handle a cell phone, a prepaid plan will minimize the risk of having them abuse it.
If you want to keep track of your child all the time, some of the newer phones come with GPS capabilities. This GPS tracker will allow parents to sleep better at night who have heard so many stories on the news of kids being abducted. GPS is not something that really has too many uses for the normal person but in a kids cell phone it is a great feature and well worth the money for the peace of mind.
Of all the cell phones made just for kids, a popular model is the Firefly phone that looks very cool. It has the programmable keys and a nice feature where it will only accept calls from numbers you have approved. That way, there will be no spam calls and you can be sure only the people who are approved will be able to contact your child. Kids like this model of phone because it looks great and then parents like it because it does a good job.
