Therapy Using Monoclonal Antibodies

Treatment methods can be as varied as the number of diseases. In accordance with this, there have been many kinds of medicines that have been introduced as cure. Surgical procedures are also often used to deal with more serious conditions in the human body. Among the more recent treatment methods that have been introduced is the monoclonal antibody therapy, one which is often used in treating cancer and similar diseases.

First, it helps to understand the function of an antibody, which is a type of protein created in our B-cells that attacks foreign viruses and bacteria. So it’s obvious that antibodies are essential to our overall health. A monoclonal antibody is an antibody that is an exact clone of another antibody, and these can be created in a laboratory setting and then used to create a variety of medicines.

The process called radioimmunotherapy is applied to deal with lymphomas. This process necessitates the bonding of monoclonal murine antibodies. Such drugs have been known to be applicable in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis since a monoclonal antibody attaches itself to a cytokine. Once this cytokine suffers an anomaly, inflammation is caused and this may lead to rheumatoid arthritis.

Another monoclonal antibody therapy is used to treat the autoimmune disease psoriasis. Adalimumab is one drug that has been created to combat this disease and it works by binding to that same TNF-a cytokine and preventing it from activating which lessens the severity of this serious skin disorder. This same drug also is used to treat Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and psoriatic arthritis.
