Decorating a Boy’s Room

Rough and tough………boys. Do they enjoy designing? Yes, they do, if it is their bedroom!

Boys are becoming much more opinioned about how they would like to decorate their bedroom. Also, decorating a child’s room allows the parents to freely express creativity. OK, it is also about reminiscing the pastimes and freedom of their own childhoods.

Just like everything else, new eventually turns old. Color is no exemption, so sticking with the standard boy colors don’t work anymore. Yes, perhaps for his nursery it did. But now, he has his favorite colors or those hues that blend much better with the rest of the room’s furnishings. Be flexible and don’t argue blue should be the only color in his room.

Decorating children’s rooms is such a fun thing to do because of the endless themes. It’s like going back to preschool or reading children stories over again. The fun and excitement are contagious. For boys, decorating isn’t all that hard. There are numerous choices to select from.

Insects may sound gross to your delicate ears but boys love them. I’m sure you’ve fretted about your son’s friendship with bugs, worms, frogs, lizards and other crawling or hopping creatures. However, your boy must like them so it’ll be really sweet if you decorate his room with these things. Not the real things of course, but go to a children’s store and you’ll find stuffed animals, figurines, photos and other decors shaped or colored like these insects. See how in-demand these unattractive creatures are among children?

Cars are a boy’s must-have toy. It can be a truck, SUV, sports car, ambulance, etc. but such an item does wonders for a boy’s imagination. Revving the engine like it’s the real thing? Yes, I thought so. Arrange his car collection in a shelf and use car-printed bed sheets, and he will feel more motivated to race his cars in the yard.

Some young ones are into history, particularly the prehistoric times. Who doesn’t know Jurassic Park? That movie inspired a history twitch in me. For younger boys who have had the chance to watch the Jurassic Park movies and enjoyed visits to museums, decorating the bedroom with this unique theme is worth the work. Your boy will enjoy looking at photos, posters and miniature images of different dinosaurs and whatever early kind hippopotamus there were eons ago.

Is your boy interested in the sun, moon and stars? Then an outer space theme is for him. Paint his walls and add a mural of the galaxy. Decorate with planets made of Styrofoam and a shining sun by his window. Dot the walls with bright whites to symbolize the multitudes of stars he sees at night. Don’t forget the moon and some comets. After, you might want to consider buying him his own astronaut suit.

Implementing a theme need not be purely make-believe. If your son is an athlete, showcase his achievements by displaying his trophies or medals. Put up a glass-paneled shelf for his uniform, equipment and other objects for all to see. Hang posters of his sports hero on the wall. Invest in a nice glass case to store his sports card collection.

An instant decorating success is to add an area rug in the list. An area rug that specially matches his room’s theme will polish the look perfectly. It can be placed in the center of the room, in front of the door, beside or at the foot of the bed, or under a set of furniture. An area rug will fill the missing piece of the decorating puzzle.

Decorating is not just about the things you buy in children’s stores. More than anything, you should personalize his bedroom so it becomes an extension of himself. Anyone sees his room and they’ll know it’s his. Display photographs, achievements, collections, a prized possession such as a signed Jersey or a caught baseball from a home run (wow!)anything that is his. Not things that became his because you bought them from somewhere. Personalizing his room will make your son even more comfortable and connected to the place in the house that is his personal zone.

Boys can help their parents in decorating their bedrooms. There is a misconception that boys do not care about their room. That attitude is definitely changing. It is important for boys to feel like the room reflects their likes.
