13 Oct 2009Having an insulated ceiling as part of your home insulation scheme is essential to keep the comfort of your indoors intact. The prevention of dissipation of heat that ceiling insulations provide keeps everyone inside the house warm and cozy without expending too much electricity or fuel for heating purposes during cold weather. The resistance to heat of the insulating materials prevents heat loss and helps to maintain the temperature inside the house intact.
The insulating material often resists the heat that is already present within the house from seeping out through the ceiling by forming a blockade and helps maintain the temperature inside the house while at the same time cutting down on the fuel and electricity bills that you would incur by way of trying to maintain the warmth in your home.
Having an insulated ceiling helps keep the inside of your house warm in cold weather conditions and cool in the summer. The most obvious benefit is of course the cutting down on electricity bills and the energy saving that you would achieve by doing so. It would also mean that you contribute in a small measure towards alleviating the energy crisis and also help towards environmental protection. There are numerous ways of insulating your ceiling properly and deriving optimum benefits from it.
The right choice can be arrived at by balancing cost and effectiveness and there need not be any compromise on either front. The main forms of ceiling insulation options are fiberglass or Rockwool Batts and fiberglass blown insulation. There is also the residential foam insulation which is more expensive but is not preferred much due to various reasons.
You can choose the right kind of insulation by comparing the costs and the effectiveness of the insulation provided by each of the different forms. The main types of ceiling insulations used are fiberglass batts and fiberglass blown insulation. Another option is to go for the residential foam insulation which is much more expensive and is least preferred due to a variety of undesirable traits. The fiberglass batt insulation is a very effective way to prevent the heat from dissipating through the ceiling and is also very uncomplicated. You could have it done by yourself if you are into handyman work.
The thing to remember while you are installing it on your own is to ensure that you do not leave any gaps and do not end up closing the vents. You also have to make sure that the installation is tight enough to leave no gaps in between.
A durable and long lasting method of ceiling insulation is the foam insulation method which is expensive but a better option than running up huge energy bills. The installation is effective enough to give you back value on your investment in the long run. This expanding insulation covers up. The foam insulation is expanding and covers almost any area that is susceptible to heat loss by spreading to it. It can be done simply by spraying it on and is a faster method of insulation. This kind of insulation however would not be recommended for homes that lack ventilation as it tends to collect damp. The other option available, which is also less expensive is having your ceiling insulated with a fiberglass blown insulation which albeit comparatively less efficient is also a much better option than having a non-insulated ceiling.
This form is however less efficient but better results can be achieved by using a double layered ceiling insulation of this form. Though expensive it would work out cheaper than the batt system of insulation any day. The material used for insulating your ceiling could either be fiberglass, cellulose or Rockwool, all of which work pretty well.
